The conversation around ethical sourcing in the food and wellness industry is one we believe every brand should be willing to have - openly, honestly, and without deflection.

Recently, ABC's Four Corners aired an investigation into chocolate, child labour, and the hidden realities of conventional cacao supply chains. It sparked a wave of important questions across our community - and a reminder that conscious consumers everywhere are paying closer attention to where their products come from, and what the true cost of "affordable" really looks like.

Since the program aired, we've received messages from customers asking us directly where our cacao comes from.

We're so glad you asked. And we want to make our position crystal clear.

What Four Corners Exposed Is Real

The issues aired in the segment are not fringe cases or isolated incidents. Child labour, poverty wages, exploitative middlemen, and supply chains deliberately designed to obscure origin - these are widespread, systemic realities across the conventional chocolate and cacao industry.

The global chocolate market is worth hundreds of billions of dollars. The farmers at the base of that supply chain - many of them in West Africa, where the vast majority of the world's commercial cocoa is grown - often earn less than $2 a day. In some regions, child labour is so deeply embedded in cocoa harvesting that entire communities depend on it simply to survive.

The program was uncomfortable to watch. It was meant to be.

Because this is what happens when we choose products based on price alone. When we don't ask where things come from. When supply chains are engineered specifically so we can't see - and therefore can't feel responsible for - what happens at the source.

The question our community has been asking is exactly the right one. And we believe every cacao and chocolate brand should be held to the same standard.

Here Is Where Our Cacao Comes From

At Cacao Collective, we source our ceremonial cacao exclusively from Peru - South America.

Not West Africa. Not through a commodity broker. From Peru.

We've been there. We've stood on the farms. We've met the farmers - the actual men and women who cultivate and harvest the cacao that arrives at your door. We've walked through the cacao groves, seen how the pods are harvested by hand, and sat at tables where people talked to me honestly about what fair trade actually means to them versus what it looks like on a label.

That connection isn't a marketing line. It's the foundation everything we do is built on.

What Our Sourcing Actually Looks Like in Practice

We pay a premium price - well above commodity rates.

The "fair trade" certification that appears on many mainstream chocolate products sets a minimum floor price. That floor price is still, in many cases, not enough to lift farming families out of poverty. We don't use that floor as our benchmark. We pay what reflects the genuine skill, care, and craft that goes into growing Criollo cacao - one of the rarest varieties in the world.

We source Criollo cacao - and we chose it deliberately.

Criollo is not a commodity crop. It's delicate, low-yielding, and demands a level of agricultural knowledge and attention that mass-market cocoa farming doesn't require. The farmers who grow it are specialists. They take enormous pride in what they do, and they should be compensated accordingly. Sourcing Criollo is, in itself, a choice to work with skilled, small-scale farmers rather than large industrial operations.

We only work with farms that share our values.

Transparency. Fair treatment of workers. Sustainable land practices. No forced labour. No child labour. These are not negotiable for us - they are baseline requirements for any farm we partner with.

No middlemen. No obscured origins.

One of the most powerful tools the conventional industry uses to obscure ethical failures is complexity - the longer and more tangled the supply chain, the harder it is to trace any ingredient back to its source. We've deliberately kept our chain short. We know exactly where our cacao comes from and who grew it. We could show you on a map. We could introduce you to the farmers.

Why This Matters for Your Daily Cup

We talk a lot about what ceremonial cacao does for your body - the flavanols, the magnesium, the theobromine, the ritual.

But every cup is also a vote.

A vote for the kind of supply chain you want to exist in the world. For the kind of relationship between producer and consumer that you believe in. For whether the person who grew your cacao was treated with dignity and paid fairly for their work.

This is what "conscious consumption" actually means - not just being mindful of what you put into your body, but being awake to the full story of what you're holding in your hands.

When you choose Cacao Collective, you're choosing a supply chain built on respect - for the farmers, for the land, and for the plant itself.

If the Program Made You Think Twice About Your Other Pantry Staples

It should have.

Cacao is not the only ingredient with a troubled supply chain. Palm oil, vanilla, coffee, and many conventional tea crops all have documented labour and environmental issues. The same questions apply: Where does it come from? Who grew it? Were they paid fairly? Can the brand actually answer that question - or do they just point you to a certification logo and hope you stop there?

Certifications matter, but they're a starting point, not a conclusion. The best evidence of ethical sourcing is a brand that can give you a specific answer - a country, a region, a farming partner, a visit.

That's the bar we hold ourselves to.

Our Ceremonial Cacao

100% organic Criollo cacao from Peru. Single ingredient. No additives, no middlemen, no supply chain we can't trace.

If you want to support a cacao industry that works differently - that puts farmers first and values transparency over convenience - this is where to start.
